邹城铁山摩崖石刻位于铁山之阳的一块斜坡为45度的巨大花岗岩石坪上。刻石南北长66.2米,东西宽16.2米,面积1085平方米。根据刻石的内容可分为经文、石颂、颂文和题名四部分。经文,系摩崖刻经的主要部分。17行,现能够辨认的近800字,经文排列整齐,行距匀称,界格清晰。
《石颂》石刻位于经文上端之西,刻“石颂”二字,篆书,直径90厘米,系颂文的标目。颂文刻于经文右侧,12行,字径22厘米左右,现存476字,骈体文,隶书为主。其中“如龙蟠雾,似风腾霄”是对佛经书法的高度评价。颂文记述了刻经的位置及周围环境、经主家世、刻经年代,并特别赞美了刻经书法艺术的精妙,颂文记述的刻经时间为:“皇周大象元年岁大渊献八月庚申朔十七日”,即公元579年。题名位于刻经的下部,记叙了宁朔将军大都督任城郡守经主孙治等的名字和摩崖刻经的书写者安道壹。

安道一(壹)是北齐时的高僧、大书法家,是几乎与“书圣”王羲之同时代的书法大家,其书法造诣及成就可与“书圣”媲美。安道一传为山东平阴东阿一带人氏,最近几年有学者考评安道一实为泰山羊氏后人羊钟。而泰山羊氏家族为魏晋时期高门,被后人所熟知的主要人物是羊祜、羊忱和羊欣,而他们的主要贡献则是书法。
铁山摩崖刻经《石颂》称安道一书法“精跨羲诞,妙越英繇”(意指书法比王羲之、韦诞高洁,比张芝、钟繇更圆妙)。康有为、郭沫若对安道一评价极高,日本书道协会更是建议中国书协应立安氏为“书仙”,以与王羲之“书圣”并驾齐驱。
